Trouw Fotograaf - Zuid Holland - Riker Video Productie & Fotografie

A little about Rikervp - a self interview.

Ken Cranney

1. Why did you start taking photos?
A: Well, I began taking images in my early teen's as I had always been interested in old abandoned barns and farms. In my 20's it became a part of my job in the auto insurance claims industry.
2. Why did you turn it into a job instead of a hobby?
A: Around the age of 40+, I really started to become more interested in doing  portraiture , creative and wedding photography. At that time I began my journey into learning to be and do more professional work and learn a new professional skill set.Turning a passion is not easy to turn into a job, for one thing you have to work at it harder than a regular 9-5 job and put more than 40 hours in a week to even be successful. But we do it for the passion and that itself has it's rewards.

3. What keeps you taking photos?
A: Always like to challenging myself and my post editing skills.

4. What inspires you to keep going?
A: Just life in general, there are always things, people, places and events going on around me all the time, that and the also people just plain inspire me in what they do.
5. Do you think what we do matters and if so, why?
A: I feel it's really important to capture that moment, mainly because I am getting older and soon may start forgetting things.. so It's a great tool to help me remember. For other people it a great memory to share with their loved ones and possibly to make a statement to future generations.... this was me and I was there.

6. How has your craft changed you?
A: Oh yes most defiantly it has, I see things a little  more differently now than how I perceived them before. I look for the little things and moments with a clearer vision. Also the way I present images is not the same as seven years ago, one thing I can say about craftsmanship is that you learn to do better at what you do everyday. Especially if your one that cares about quality and what you produce.

How has it changed others?
A: Well to answer this honestly, I have been inspired by people greater than me in this field and I have had people a little less skilled in photography admire my work and my skill set. But that doesn't mean I am better than them. Maybe just a little push for them to polish or learn a new skill set.

7.  Is this your dream job or just something you're good at so you do it?
A: Well this was never my dream job growing up, but I sure do love it now as I get to meet new and interesting people everyday and get to work out some of the photographic ideas I have rolling around in my head and make them tangible in digital media for others to see. Everyday is a work in progress and I'd like to think I am somewhat good at it.. but you can always learn a new trick everyday and still not know everything there is to know.

8. Why are you so passionate about taking photos?
A: As I stated earlier in this self interview, I feel the great importance of capturing the moment for future generations as well as capturing the now.

9. How long have you been in business, how much longer do you want to be?
A: I had begun my journey into doing and being professional 7 years ago in 2006 while still in Canada, even though I have had over 20 years experience in photography, it was mostly documentary for investigations on car / auto collision damages, fire damage and or finding the cause for insurance claims, but also for other damages that add supporting information on claim files in auto insurance.
This was me 45 years old in 2006 and starting out to becoming a professional.

10. What was the best piece of advice you ever received in regards to your photo business?
A: Work at it everyday, stick your foot in every door, and team work and learn what you can from others in the business. It's great to always get different points of views.. those views will help shape your own.

11. If you could change one things about your business, what would it be?
A: Visibility, that is my biggest goal this year to try and change that. In this small country here and also abroad. To become more known for someone that does good work, treats his clients fairly and with respect, to provide a great service for a reasonable price. that has always been my personal goal and will continue to be.
